Clash of the Spartans

November 30th, 2009

With their campuses only 12 miles apart, USC and UCLA have cultivated a growing rivalry for over 75 years. After months of cross-city taunts and a series of pranks that included USC students painting the UCLA Bruin statue cardinal red and gold, the rivalry came to a head last Saturday as the football teams battled it out. USC’s defense finally came through and they dominated the game, but both teams decided to be stubborn with 54 seconds left and USC winning 21-7. Common football etiquette dictates that if the winning team has control of the ball in the final seconds, they let the clock run out. UCLA ignored convention and stopped the clock with a timeout in a last ditch effort. Instead of running the clock out, USC responded with an unexpected passing play and touchdown that ran the score up to 28-7. Fans of both sides erupted in anger and proceeded to vocally show their dissatisfaction. Fans of the losing team needed some NeuroBliss as they argued about how to end a game gracefully. While we are all for spirited competition (it’s healthy!) everyone can use a little mood enhancement, which NeuroBliss gives, when the turn-out isn’t quite what you expected.
